Calcutta HC Orders Ex-Principal Of RG Kar Hospital To Take Extended Leave After Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder

The Calcutta High Court ordered Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, to take an extended leave following the brutal rape and murder of a doctor on campus. Despite his resignation, he was quickly appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC) just hours later. The court has demanded the case diary for the RG Kar rape and murder case by 1 pm.

The court expressed concern over the swift appointment, questioning the ethics of rewarding someone who stepped down due to moral responsibility. Live Law India quoted the court as saying, “If the principal has stepped down owing to moral responsibility, it’s rather serious that he is rewarded within 12 hours with another appointment. There is an apprehension that with lost time, something will go wrong.” The court emphasized that the principal acts as the guardian of all doctors working at the hospital, adding that if he fails to show empathy, no one else will. The court concluded that Dr. Ghosh should remain at home, not employed elsewhere.

The post-mortem report of the trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, revealed that she endured “genital torture.” The assailant throttled her before smothering her to death, resulting in the fracture of her thyroid cartilage. The crime occurred between 3 am and 5 am on August 9.

The report detailed injuries to the victim’s belly, lips, fingers, and left leg. The perpetrator covered her mouth and pushed her head against a wall or the floor to silence her, preventing any calls for help.

In response to mounting outrage and countrywide strikes, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee set a six-day deadline for the city police to solve the case. Banerjee stated that if the police fail to crack the case by Sunday, her government will request the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe, addressing the main demand of opposition parties and student protesters.
