Cabinet Greenlights BioE3 Policy To Propel Green Growth & Biomanufacturing

The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its nod to the ‘BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) Policy for Fostering High-Performance Biomanufacturing’ on Saturday.

This ambitious policy, spearheaded by the Department of Biotechnology, aims to accelerate India’s transition towards a green economy and achieve Net Zero carbon emissions.

The BioE3 Policy is likely to foster innovation and support research and development across several key sectors.

It includes the creation of Biomanufacturing & Bio-AI hubs and Biofoundry, which are likely to fast-track technology development and commercialization.

The policy however focuses on adopting regenerative bioeconomy models, expanding the skilled workforce, and boosting job creation.

By aligning with existing government initiatives like the ‘Net Zero’ carbon economy and ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ campaigns, the BioE3 Policy aims to drive accelerated green growth and promote a Circular Bioeconomy.

This strategic approach is likely to advance India’s sustainable and innovative future goals, as part of the broader Bio-vision for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India).

Policy Aims to Tackle Climate Change, Food Security, & Health Through Biomanufacturing

An official statement highlighted the policy’s importance in addressing pressing societal issues such as climate change, food security, and human health.

“Our present era is an opportune time to invest in the industrialisation of biology to promote sustainable and circular practices to address some of the critical societal issues-such as climate change mitigation, food security and human health. It is important to build a resilient biomanufacturing ecosystem in our nation to accelerate cutting-edge innovations for developing bio-based products,” the statement explained.

Meanwhile, high-performance biomanufacturing is expected to span a range of applications from medical products to agricultural solutions.

The BioE3 Policy will target strategic sectors including high-value bio-based chemicals, biopolymers, smart proteins and functional foods, precision biotherapeutics, climate-resilient agriculture, carbon capture and utilization, and research in marine and space sciences.
