C Rajagopalachari Statue To Be Unveiled At Rashtrapati Bhavan, Announces PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that India will observe ‘Rajaji Utsav’ on February 23 with the unveiling of a statue of C. Rajagopalachari, the first Indian Governor-General of Independent India. The statue will be installed in the Central Courtyard of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Speaking during the 131st episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister recalled his call for ‘Panch-Pran’ during the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.

He said one of the pledges was freedom from the mentality of slavery, adding that the country is moving away from symbols associated with colonial rule and embracing those linked to Indian culture. He described the move at Rashtrapati Bhavan as an important step in that direction.

Replacing Colonial Symbols

Highlighting Rajagopalachari’s legacy, PM Modi said he viewed power as service rather than position. He said Rajagopalachari’s conduct, self-restraint and independent thinking in public life continue to inspire.

The Prime Minister expressed regret that colonial-era symbols had continued within the presidential estate even after Independence. He said statues of British administrators remained on the premises for decades, while icons of India’s freedom movement and national leadership did not receive similar recognition.

Referring to British architect Edwin Lutyens, he said a statue of Lutyens had stood at Rashtrapati Bhavan and would now be replaced by Rajagopalachari’s statue.

An exhibition dedicated to Rajagopalachari will also be organised as part of Rajaji Utsav. It will remain open to visitors from February 24 to March 1. The Prime Minister urged citizens to visit and learn more about Rajagopalachari’s life and contributions.
