BRICS Summit 2026: PM Modi, Xi Jinping Set For Talks On India-China Relations

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi on Saturday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, marking his first visit to India in nearly seven years. Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada received President Xi at the airport.

The Ministry of External Affairs said India looked forward to constructive discussions with the Chinese President during his visit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping are scheduled to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit. They are likely to discuss India-China relations, border stability and ways to strengthen communication.

Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong said President Xi is travelling with senior officials, including Cai Qi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

President Xi’s visit comes as India and China work to stabilise ties after the 2020 Galwan clashes. India has stressed the need for peace along the border.

PM Modi and President Xi briefly interacted during the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek. Their upcoming meeting will give both sides an opportunity to discuss bilateral and regional issues.

Xu Feihong said China and India were preparing for the meeting and would work to implement the strategic guidance provided by the two leaders. He called for greater communication, cooperation and proper management of differences.

India is hosting the two-day 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam as the grouping’s 2026 Chair.

The summit follows the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’, reflecting PM Modi’s people-centric vision rooted in ‘Humanity First’.

The summit brings together BRICS members and partner countries to discuss common priorities and regional and global developments. BRICS has 11 members and 10 partner countries.

President Xi’s participation will strengthen India-China engagement within BRICS and help both countries advance dialogue and manage differences.
