Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed leaders of the expanded BRICS grouping as they arrived at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi for the second day of the 18th BRICS Summit on Sunday.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Ghanaian President John Mahama, Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Philippine President Ferdinand R Marcos and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud were among those attending the summit.
BRICS and outreach leaders will, however, discuss mutual interests and ways to strengthen cooperation under India’s theme of resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability.
On Saturday, BRICS countries adopted the New Delhi Declaration, commending India for hosting the Outreach/BRICS Plus Dialogue and stating that its chairship had given fresh impetus to international cooperation and solidarity.
The declaration reaffirmed the grouping’s commitment to mutual respect, sovereign equality, solidarity, inclusiveness, collaboration and consensus. It further outlined plans to strengthen cooperation across political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people pillars.
The adoption of the joint statement on the summit’s first day was described as a major diplomatic breakthrough amid differing geopolitical positions among BRICS members.
The declaration reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to peace, sustainable development, inclusive growth, a fairer international order and a stronger multilateral system.
On Saturday, PM Modi hosted a gala dinner for BRICS leaders at Bharat Mandapam, featuring a vegan menu celebrating Indian cuisine, the ‘Navarasa’ cultural show and the BRICS Symphony.
