Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined fellow BRICS leaders for a collective tree plantation programme in New Delhi on Saturday during the 18th BRICS Summit.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira took part in the initiative alongside PM Modi.
The leaders subsequently held hands and gathered for the customary family photograph on the lawns of Bharat Mandapam.
Earlier, participating leaders attended the summit session titled ‘Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism’ at Bharat Mandapam.
India is hosting the two-day BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, bringing together representatives from member nations, partner countries and outreach invitees.
During the summit, PM Modi announced that BRICS members had unanimously approved the New Delhi Declaration 2026.
The Prime Minister released two commemorative postage stamps to mark the completion of 20 years since the establishment of BRICS.
While concluding the summit session, PM Modi stressed that member nations must now implement the decisions they had collectively taken.
PM Modi said the BRICS leaders examined important regional and international developments while identifying areas for deeper cooperation. He termed their exchanges ‘meaningful and constructive’ and said the discussions had demonstrated the need to reform established global institutions.
