On Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party will secure a decisive lead in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Addressing reporters, Shah said the party expects to win at least 110 of the 152 constituencies that went to the polls on April 23, based on an internal assessment conducted after voting concluded. He added that the BJP is on course to form the next government in the state with a clear majority.
Thanking voters for their participation, Shah said the high turnout reflects a shift in public sentiment and praised election officials, central forces and the state police for ensuring a peaceful polling process. He noted that, for the first time in many years, the phase concluded without any reported deaths.
The Home Minister also indicated that if the BJP comes to power, the next Chief Minister would be a leader rooted in West Bengal, emphasising that the person would be a Bengali by birth and education.
Referring to the upcoming second phase of polling scheduled for April 29, Shah said the party is aiming to win at least 77 constituencies. He described the overall contest in the state as challenging but asserted that there is strong public support for the BJP.
The elections in West Bengal have emerged as a closely watched contest, and the counting of votes will determine the results for all phases.
