BJP Releases First List Of 88 Candidates For Assam Assembly Polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made public its first batch of candidates for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, covering 88 constituencies across the state. This marks the beginning of the party’s formal electoral rollout.

The list received approval at a meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee, led by its senior leadership. The selection process highlights the BJP’s calculated approach ahead of the polls.

The party has included several high-profile leaders, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will defend his Jalukbari seat, which remains a key BJP bastion.

Veteran leader Chandramohan Patowary will contest from Tihu, while the party will renominate Finance Minister Ajanta Neog from Golaghat.

In prominent urban constituencies, the BJP has chosen Pradyut Bordoloi for Dispur, Diplu Ranjan Sarmah for New Guwahati, and Vijay Kumar Gupta for Guwahati Central. These nominations indicate the party’s focus on maintaining its urban voter base.

Bordoloi recently switched to the BJP from the Congress and resigned from his parliamentary role before receiving the ticket.

The party has also announced nominees for several constituencies in Upper Assam, including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Digboi, Doom Dooma and Margherita.

Bhaskar Sharma will contest from Margherita, while the party will field Prasanta Phukan and Suren Phukan from Dibrugarh and Digboi, respectively.

The BJP has also named candidates for constituencies in Central and Lower Assam, including Rangia, Nalbari, Barhampur, Samaguri and Nagaon. The party has chosen Jitu Goswami for Barhampur, while Rupak Sarmah will contest from Nagaon-Batadraba.

The party has fielded candidates in constituencies reserved for tribal communities, including Boko-Chaygaon, Tamulpur, Dhemaji, Majuli, Bokajan and Diphu. These selections aim to strengthen its connection with indigenous voters.

The initial list presents a mix of seasoned politicians and fresh faces, reflecting a broad-based strategy.

The BJP is likely to announce additional candidates shortly as it refines its approach for the Assembly elections.
