BJP leaders intensified their attack on Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday, challenging his performance and questioning the manner in which he has recently taken up political issues.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh accused Gandhi of failing to perform the duties expected from the Leader of Opposition. He further alleged that the Opposition had raised the Vande Mataram issue with political motives.
While referring to the recent pellet gun controversy, Singh accused the Opposition of attempting to keep the issue in the spotlight.
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh criticised Gandhi over his political engagements.
Ghosh questioned why the Congress leader had chosen to visit other places instead of travelling to Jharkhand, where students have been holding protests over issues concerning them. He pointed to a court ruling against a decision taken by the Jharkhand government and argued that Gandhi should focus on the students’ concerns there.
Another BJP leader, TR Sriniwas, criticised Gandhi over his protest at the Parliament Street Police Station.
Sriniwas accused him of using such interventions for political publicity and questioned his commitment to political work.
Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy presented a different view and praised Gandhi for standing alongside the protesting students.
Roy said Gandhi’s intervention helped draw attention to the alleged police action against the students. He highlighted Gandhi’s nine-hour protest and said authorities eventually registered an FIR concerning the alleged police action and atrocities.
The TMC leader described the development as a major achievement for Gandhi in his capacity as Leader of Opposition.
The contrasting statements underline the widening political divide over Gandhi’s recent activities.
While BJP leaders have questioned his conduct and effectiveness as Leader of Opposition, the Trinamool Congress has defended his decision to intervene in the students’ protest and pursue action over the pellet gun controversy.
