The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is observing ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ or Constitution Murder Day on Thursday in several states. This day marks the anniversary of the Emergency declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975.
Through various events, the BJP aims to highlight the Emergency’s impact on democracy and civil liberties.
In Bihar, the BJP is organising large events at nearly 90,000 local booths across the state.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda will attend a special event in Patna to honour around 450 people who fought against the Emergency and helped protect democracy.
At a press conference, BJP leaders Haribhushan Thakur Bachol and Pawan Jaiswal said the Congress government had restricted fundamental rights and weakened democratic institutions during the Emergency to retain political power.
Pawan Jaiswal announced that the BJP will organise workers’ conferences across all 52 organisational districts in Bihar from June 30 to July 6.
The party will also conduct student programmes in five administrative divisions through its youth and women’s wings.
In Haryana, BJP leaders marked the occasion and described the Emergency as one of the darkest periods in India’s democratic history.
Speaking in Panchkula, MLA Ghanshyam Das Arora accused the Congress of curbing democratic rights, institutional independence and free speech during the Emergency. He further alleged that the government jailed thousands of political workers, journalists and social activists and enforced strict censorship on the media.
The BJP says it observes ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to honour those who fought to restore democracy and to educate younger generations about the importance of constitutional freedoms.
