The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the Congress on Thursday for questioning the credibility of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) after its loss in Maharashtra elections. Using its official account on X, the BJP mocked the Congress in Hindi, saying, “Sweet gossip, bitter spit. If they lose, they cry about EVMs. If they win, it’s Congress’s victory. It’s not EVMs, but Congress’s intentions that are bad!”
The BJP referenced Congress’s celebratory post on Priyanka Gandhi’s victory in Kerala’s Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. Rahul Gandhi vacated this seat after contesting both Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The BJP accused Congress of double standards. The Congress, as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), lost to BJP’s Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra by a significant margin. However, Congress’s coalition with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) won a second term in Jharkhand, defeating the BJP.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge renewed his demand for ballot paper voting after the Maharashtra and Jharkhand election results. The Congress continues to allege that EVM tampering favors the BJP in elections.
The Supreme Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by evangelist K.A. Paul questioning EVMs. Justice Vikram Nath said, “EVMs are tampered with when you lose but fine if you win.” The court highlighted similar allegations by politicians like Chandrababu Naidu and Jagan Mohan Reddy after their electoral defeats.
The debate over EVM tampering persists, with parties questioning the machines only when results don’t favor them.
