The flood crisis in Bihar has intensified as the Ganga and other prominent rivers continue to rise.
At Patna’s Gandhi Ghat, the Ganga has crossed the danger mark and is nearing its Highest Flood Level.
The development has prompted tighter surveillance by the state government and the Disaster Management Department.
Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary reviewed the situation with senior officials on Saturday. He ordered strict monitoring of riverbanks and embankments. He directed officials to warn residents in vulnerable areas and take preventive action promptly.
District flood teams are conducting continuous patrols at sensitive locations.
After the review, Chaudhary said the Ganga had exceeded its previous peak. It surpassed the highest level recorded in 2016, around 10:30 AM on Saturday.
Officials stationed personnel at vulnerable points, and the administration prepared to handle any emergency.
The Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, Punpun and Ghaghara have crossed danger levels at several locations.
Ganga remains above the mark at Digha, Gandhi Ghat, Hathidah, Bhagalpur, Kahalgaon, Buxar and Munger.
The Gandak has crossed the mark at Dumaria Ghat and Hajipur. The Kosi remains above it at Baltara and Kursela. Burhi Gandak has crossed it at Khagaria.
District administrations have expanded relief measures for low-lying areas.
Community kitchens are providing meals to displaced residents.
Bhagalpur has six kitchens serving around 5,000 people, distributing over 70,600 meals. Bhojpur operates 13 kitchens for nearly 2.84 lakh affected people across four blocks. Patna has eight kitchens serving around 2.32 lakh people across nine blocks.
Seven additional centres have opened in the capital. Saran kitchens serve nearly 20,000 residents.
85,000 people, including 326 residents, have taken shelter at a designated relief camp in Vaishali.
The government has deployed 693 boats for evacuation and transport. Vaishali has 155 boats, Samastipur 88, Bhojpur 87, Patna 70, Madhepura 58, Khagaria 43 and Purnea 35.
Authorities are mobilising relief supplies across Arwal, Buxar, Begusarai, Samastipur, Khagaria, Munger and Katihar. Continuous surveillance remains in place as river levels rise.
