The Union government on Monday rolled out a landmark Goods and Services Tax (GST) reform across India on the auspicious occasion of Navratri.
The overhaul simplifies the tax structure into two primary slabs, 5 per cent and 18 per cent, replacing the earlier multi-tier system.
Officials said the move aims to make the tax regime more transparent and user-friendly for citizens and businesses alike.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar welcomed the new GST rates as a ‘historic step’ that will strengthen India’s economic foundation.
He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of the people of Bihar, saying the reform would benefit every section of society.
“This new system will reduce the cost of everyday items, lightening the financial burden on lower and middle-income families. It will also accelerate the country’s economic growth,” he said in a statement.
According to economic experts, the simplified GST will increase demand and attract new investment by easing compliance and lowering costs for businesses of all sizes.
The Union government expects the reform to deliver immediate price relief on daily-use goods during the festive season.
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary described the rollout as the beginning of ‘GST celebrations’ under PM Modi’s leadership.
“We will meet shopkeepers to ensure they receive goods at the correct rates,” he said.
Union Minister Nityanand Rai also welcomed the reform, stating that from Monday, all daily-use items had become cheaper.
“There will be price relief for all items used in everyday life,” he noted.
Experts say the reform strengthens India’s vision for a transparent, simplified, and growth-oriented tax system while directly benefitting households across the country.
