Air quality has deteriorated sharply across Bihar ahead of Diwali, with firecracker emissions adding to the pollution burden in several cities. Buxar recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 441, indicating extremely poor air quality and posing serious health risks to residents.
Continuous bursting of firecrackers has released smoke and harmful particulate matter into the atmosphere, worsening pollution across the state.
According to available air quality data, Bettiah recorded an AQI of 364, followed by Motihari at 357, Sasaram and Siwan at 326 each, and Muzaffarpur at 325.
Darbhanga registered an AQI of 300, while Samastipur recorded 289 and Bhagalpur 268. Patna, the state capital, reported an AQI of 248, highlighting the widespread deterioration in air quality during the festive period. However, readings may vary depending on monitoring platforms and measurement timings.
Pollution and firecracker smoke have caused discomfort in Patna, particularly among children, elderly people and those with respiratory illnesses. Environmental expert Raj Kumar Jha urged parents to discourage firecrackers, stressing that pollution control requires public cooperation.
Jha also questioned the effectiveness of temporary measures, including sprinkling water on roads in selected areas.
He called for comprehensive action to address pollution, garbage, contaminated water and open drains in localities such as Saristabad and Gardanibagh.
He emphasised that pollution control requires sustained efforts rather than temporary arrangements during festivals.
The rising AQI levels have once again highlighted the growing public health challenge in Bihar. Authorities and residents now face the task of balancing Diwali celebrations with environmental protection and ensuring access to cleaner air.
