Bharat Express CMD Upendrra Rai Highlights Gandhi’s Legacy And Relevance In Modern Journalism At ISGS 45th Conference

The 45th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Gandhian Studies (ISGS) began on Monday at the CPDUMT Auditorium, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad. The event, which runs until January 29, focuses on the theme, “Mahatma Gandhi’s journalism and its relevance in contemporary times.”

Upendrra Rai, CMD and Editor-in-Chief of Bharat Express News Network, inaugurated the conference as the chief guest. In his opening address, Bharat Express CMD highlighted the enduring values of Gandhi’s journalistic practices and their relevance in today’s media landscape.

Exploring Gandhi’s Journalism In Modern Context

The conference unites academics, researchers, and Gandhian scholars to examine how Gandhi’s principles of truth, non-violence, and ethical journalism can shape contemporary media. Participants will discuss how Gandhi’s focus on public service and community engagement can tackle modern challenges in journalism.

The event features panel discussions, paper presentations, and workshops, offering a platform to analyze journalism’s evolving role through a Gandhian lens. Delegates will reflect on how Gandhi’s emphasis on accountability and grassroots communication remains significant in the digital media era.

During his address, CMD Upendrra Rai noted the enduring public interest in Mahatma Gandhi. “When I announced the topic, the engagement on my Instagram peaked among his 6 million followers, which reflects the lasting legacy of Gandhiji,” he said.

CMD Rai emphasized Gandhi’s exceptional commitment as a journalist, noting, “Gandhiji wrote 70,000 handwritten letters to people across the world, which speaks volumes about his dedication.”

Highlighting Gandhi’s transformation, Bharat Express CMD stated, “He evolved from Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in Britain and an advocate in Africa to Mahatma Gandhi during India’s non-violent struggle for independence.”

CMD Rai also addressed the opposition Gandhi faced during his lifetime. “Like Jesus Christ, Mahatma Gandhi faced criticism from the Garam Dal and fellow revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose. Yet, they deeply respected him, as reflected in their writings and interactions with him.”

He concluded with a powerful statement: “I can say with utmost conviction that if Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Buddha were to walk the land of India again, they would face resistance because new beliefs and thoughts always encounter opposition.”

Bharat Express CMD praised Gandhi’s honesty in documenting his life. “In his autobiography My Experiment with Truth, Gandhi wrote about his flaws and strengths with sincerity. Only someone of his integrity could narrate his life’s transformation with such honesty,” he added.

Digital Media As The Future

Highlighting the growing influence of digital media, CMD Upendrra Rai stated, “Social media today empowers every individual to share their message globally. It has become a powerful tool for societal change.” He cited examples, including the Manipur incident in May 2023, where a viral video on Facebook ignited nationwide outrage, prompting action from Parliament and the judiciary.

Bharat Express CMD also discussed the historical evolution of the press, tracing its origins to British parliamentarian Edmund Burke’s 1787 concept of the press as the fourth pillar of democracy. However, he expressed concerns over mainstream media’s declining accountability, saying, “Mainstream media is failing to fulfill its responsibility, but social media is bridging that gap.”

Reflections On Journalism And Responsibility

CMD Upendrra Rai concluded by reflecting on his 28-year journalism career, stating, “I began my journey at 17, and everything I’ve learned, I share openly. If I have made any mistakes, I apologize.” He urged the youth to study Gandhi’s life in detail and understand his journey from Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi.

The conference continues until January 29, offering further insights into Gandhi’s relevance in today’s media landscape.
