A Special Court of Magistrate on Tuesday granted bail Tamil Nadu Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Udhayanidhi Stalin. A case was registered against Stalin for making an offensive comment on Sanatan Dharma.
On the basis of a complaint filed by social activist V Paramesha regarding disparaging remarks made against Sanatana Dharma, the court had ordered Udhayanidhi Stalin to appear before it.
Tuesday morning, Udhayanidhi Stalin had made an appearance before the court.
Stalin was also exempted by the court from having to appear in any other court sessions related to the matter.
The Special Court postponed the case until August 8 since the Supreme Court is also reviewing it. The complaint stated that Udhayanidhi Stalin’s comments disparaged him, his religion, and Hindus in general.

The court had taken cognisance of offences under IPC Sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation, with intent to cause riot) 298 (uttering words etc with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings) and 500 (defamation).
Udhayanidhi Stalin declared that Sanatana Dharma should be “eradicated”. Citing the reason behind his comment, he said that it was opposed to social justice and equality. The comment was made during a speech at a conference in September 2023.
A national controversy was sparked by the comment.
