Bazm-e-Sahafat: Urdu Journalism Must Embrace Technology And Innovation By 2047, Says Dr Md Shams Equbal

Dr Md Shams Equbal has called for Urdu journalism to embrace technology, innovation and modern journalistic practices to build a stronger future for the language by 2047.

Speaking at the Bharat Express and NCPL event, Dr Equbal said Urdu journalism had adapted to changing circumstances since India gained independence, but now needed to prepare for a new phase shaped by technology and innovation.

The discussion addressed the widespread perception that Urdu belongs exclusively to Muslims.

Dr Equbal highlighted the language’s broader historical roots and cited the 1822 publication of Jam-e-Jahan Numa as an example.

Haridutt owned the newspaper, reflecting the contributions of people from different communities to the development of Urdu journalism.

Organisations such as Bharat Express, Sahara and Dainik Jagran’s Inquilab have contributed to the growth of Urdu journalism, he noted. Such contributions, he said, should be recognised without viewing the language through a religious lens.

Dr Equbal called for collective efforts to end the perception by 2047 that Urdu belongs to only one community. He urged Urdu journalists to maintain high linguistic standards, stressing the importance of accuracy in language and statements while reporting news.

Greater attention to linguistic precision and professional quality, he said, should extend across news reports, features and other forms of content.

Urdu journalism can play a significant role in the Viksit Bharat 2047 journey by combining its historical heritage with technology, innovation and contemporary journalism, Dr Equbal said.

The Bharat Express and NCPL event featured discussions throughout the day on Urdu journalism, language and its future.
