Azad Hi Rahein Hain, Azad Hi Rahenge: A Tribute To Chandra Shekhar Azad’s Sacrifice

Chandra Shekhar Azad, an Indian revolutionary, passed away 90 years ago on February 27, 2021.

On this day in 1931, Azad was killed in Alfred Park, Allahabad, after being betrayed by a friend. He managed to hold off the heavily armed cops who were around him for a considerable amount of time with just a tiny pistol and a few rounds.

He shot himself in the head with the one bullet he had left, nevertheless, and kept to his promise that he would never be arrested and carried to the gallows to be hanged.

Here are some details about the freedom fighter who gave his life in defense of the country:

His Journey

Pandit Sita Ram Tiwari and Jagrani Devi welcomed their first child, Chandra Shekhar Azad, on July 23, 1906, in the Madhya Pradesh village of Bhavra.

His early education was completed in Bhavra. For further study, he proceeded to Varanasi’s Sanskrit Pathashala.

The massive national uprising of the non-violent, non-cooperation movement of 1920–1921, led by Mahatma Gandhi, captivated and attracted young Chandra Shekhar.

When he was arrested and brought before the court, he identified himself as “Azad,” his father as “Swatantra,” and his place of residence as “jail.” He received a 15-flogging penalty from the magistrate. Following that, Azad became its official name.

Azad, A Revolutionary

Azad was drawn to revolutionary actions after the non-cooperation movement withdrew. After that, he became a member of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).

After the passing of the Hindustan Republican Association’s founder, Ram Prasad Bismil, and three other important party figures, Roshan Singh, Rajendra Nath Lahiri, and Ashfaqulla Khan, Azad restructured the organization as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA).

He participated in several plots, including the Kakori Conspiracy (1926), the Viceroy’s train bombing attempt (1926), the Assembly bombing, the Delhi Conspiracy, the Saunders shooting in Lahore (1928), and the Second Lahore Conspiracy.

Chandrasekhar Azad Park has replaced Alfred Park with its name.

His only piece of poetry was a Hindustani couplet, “Dushman ki goliyon ka hum saamna karenge,” which he used to repeat with affection.  Azad hi rahein hain, azad hi rahenge’
