Attempted Petrol Bomb Attack on Tamil Nadu Governor’s Residence Leads to Detainment

A man, identified as Vinod, was detained for attempting to throw a petrol bomb at the gate of Raj Bhavan in Chennai. This incident occurred around 2.45 pm on a Wednesday. The main gate, typically used by Governor RN Ravi, was the target of the attack. Officials mentioned that Vinod would undergo a mental health examination and is likely to be arrested soon.

This incident is amid ongoing tensions between the Tamil Nadu government led by the DMK and Governor RN Ravi. The backdrop for these tensions includes the governor returning a state government file recommending the appointment of former director general of police C Sylendra Babu as the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission for the second time. The governor had previously questioned the selection criteria and the adherence to Supreme Court guidelines.

The DMK government has maintained that no guidelines were violated and asserted that the governor must follow the recommendations of the elected government, emphasizing that the governor has no prerogative in such matters.

Tensions between the MK Stalin government and Mr. Ravi escalated since January, beginning with the governor’s partial omission of text during his customary address to the state Assembly. There have been other points of contention, including an alleged suggestion by the governor to change the name of the state to ‘Tamilagam.’

The DMK government has accused Mr. Ravi of behaving as an agent of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Singh (RSS) and the BJP. These events underscore the political friction in Tamil Nadu.
