Assam Flood Death Toll Rises To 87 As Rehabilitation Efforts Expand

Assam’s flood situation continued to improve on Tuesday. This year’s cumulative death toll rose to 87. Rehabilitation efforts gathered pace across the affected districts as authorities expanded relief operations.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods have affected 11,45,109 people across 25 districts between April 29 and August 3. The disaster impacted 77 revenue circles and 2,281 villages during the period.

Sivasagar recorded the highest number of fatalities with 47 deaths. Charaideo reported 21 deaths, followed by Jorhat with nine.

Dhemaji and Golaghat recorded three deaths each, while Karbi Anglong reported two. Sonitpur and Kamrup recorded one fatality each.

Four people also remain missing, including three in Sivasagar and one in Dhemaji.

The ASDMA stated that 224 relief camps are currently sheltering 73,074 displaced residents. 1,844 relief distribution centres continue to provide essential assistance across affected regions.

Authorities have also shifted 29,985 people to safer locations as a precaution.

Floodwaters have severely damaged residential properties across the state.

Officials confirmed that 3,771 houses were completely destroyed, while another 12,987 suffered partial damage.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said relief operations remain active as rehabilitation efforts continue to expand across flood-hit districts.

Taking to X, CM Sarma posted, “Relief efforts continue while rehabilitation gathers pace across the affected districts. We are fully committed to helping every family recover.”

The state government continues restoration work, damage assessment and relief distribution in coordination with district administrations. Officials are also facilitating the return of displaced families as floodwaters recede.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious because intermittent upstream rainfall could still affect river levels.
