Asian Games 2026: PM Modi Hails Gulveer Singh, Manpreet Kaur And Baranica Elangovan After Medal Wins

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Indian athletes Gulveer Singh, Manpreet Kaur and Baranica Elangovan for their medal-winning performances at the Asian Games 2026, saying their achievements would inspire young athletes across the country.

In a post shared through the Prime Minister’s Office on X, PM Modi congratulated Gulveer for his silver medal in the men’s 10,000m and praised his consistency on the Asian Games podium.

“A Bronze earlier and now a Silver in Aichi-Nagoya. Gulveer Singh keeps making us proud on the Asian Games podium!” the PMO said, adding that his perseverance and progress would motivate young distance runners in India.

PM Modi congratulated Manpreet for her bronze medal in the women’s shot put.

Describing her effort as a ‘fine effort’, the post said her impressive throw had earned her a place on the Asian Games podium and wished her continued success.

Baranica Elangovan was similarly praised for her historic achievement in the women’s pole vault.

PM Modi called her medal a ‘special leap’ and an ‘exemplary medal for India’, noting that her performance on her Asian Games debut could encourage more young athletes to take up the sport.

Strong Performances Across Athletics

The three medals came through strong performances across different athletics disciplines.

Gulveer clocked 28:29.38 to take silver in the 10,000m, while Manpreet produced a best throw of 17.17m for bronze in the shot put.

Baranica cleared 4.15m to secure bronze in the pole vault, becoming the first Indian to win an Asian Games medal in the event. She shared the medal with Kazakhstan’s Polina Ivanova, who matched her height.

Gulveer’s medal was his second at the Asian Games after his 10,000m bronze at Hangzhou in 2023.

Manpreet became only the third Indian woman to win an Asian Games shot put medal, while Baranica capped a breakthrough season that saw her improve the national record twice.
