The Supreme Court’s vacation bench will hear the interim bail plea filed by an accused in the Bhima Koregaon violence case, on June 21. Accused Mahesh Raut has sought interim bail to attend a funeral ceremony of his grandmother.
During the hearing of the case, the Supreme Court asked the petitioner’s lawyer that the funeral was on May 26, It further asked about left ceremonies are left to be held now. The court inquired the petitioner for not informing the dates of the ceremonies
The lawyer appearing on behalf of the NIA said that they need time to give instructions, as they were not informed about the dates.
Notably, 33-year-old activist Mahesh Rauz had got bail from the lower court. However, later, it was cancelled. While granting bail, the court had said that the evidence presented by the NIA against him was a rumour.
The court had said that Raut can be called a member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) to some extent. The court further maintained he has not been held responsible for any terrorist activity. In the further observation court said that the NIA could not prove that he was involved in recruiting people for the banned organization.
Raut was arrested in June 2018 and is currently lodged in Taloja jail on the outskirts of Mumbai. The case is related to the Elgar Parishad held in Pune in December 2017.
According to Pune Police, the Maoists had organized this conference. The police had alleged that speeches given at the conference led to violence at the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial in Pune the next day.
