Andhra Pradesh On High Alert Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has urged state officials to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall continues to affect various regions, particularly Nellore, following the intensification of a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal into a depression.

Since Tuesday, several districts have experienced significant rainfall, with forecasts indicating some areas could receive over 20 centimeters, raising concerns about potential flash floods. In response, CM Naidu has directed the administration to implement precautionary measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property.

During a review of the situation, the Chief Minister requested regular updates from officials regarding conditions in the impacted areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the depression, located about 360 kilometers east-southeast of Chennai, will move west-northwestward and make landfall along the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh, near Chennai early Thursday morning.

Southern Andhra Pradesh and the Rayalaseema region can expect heavy to very heavy rainfall on both Wednesday and Thursday. Additionally, squally winds, reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h and gusting up to 60 km/h, will affect the coasts until midday on October 17, with conditions gradually improving afterward.

The IMD has issued a warning for rough sea conditions in the Bay of Bengal, advising fishermen to avoid going out to sea and urging those currently at sea to return to shore.

In light of the severe weather conditions, Ronanki Kurmanath, director of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), has appealed to residents to stay alert and follow safety precautions.
