Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday and urged the Centre to extend more financial support to the state, which is still struggling with resource shortages.
Naidu discussed several major projects and development programmes with Shah and thanked the Centre for its help during the critical phase last year. He told the Home Minister that with the Centre’s assistance, he was working to revive the state’s damaged economy.
The Chief Minister stressed that Andhra Pradesh continues to face a serious financial crunch. He explained the need for further Central support to fund key infrastructure and development plans.
Naidu, a key NDA ally from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), said he had urged the 16th Finance Commission to factor in Andhra Pradesh’s bifurcation losses while allocating funds.
Naidu also raised the issue of the Polavaram-Banakacherla link project, a proposed scheme to divert 200 TMC of floodwater from Polavaram to the Banakacherla regulator in Kurnool district. He said this interlinking project would be a major boost for the drought-prone Rayalaseema region.
He told Shah that Andhra Pradesh, being the last state on the Godavari River’s course, had the rightful claim to use surplus water, which flows steadily for 90 to 120 days each year, even after other states’ needs are met.
The Chief Minister also thanked the Centre for appointing senior TDP leader Ashok Gajapathi Raju as the Governor of Goa.
Earlier, Naidu met NITI Aayog Member VK Saraswat and discussed setting up aerospace and defence industries in Rayalaseema. He said the state government is planning to develop defence manufacturing hubs and is taking steps to attract investment.
Later, Delhi Metro Rail Managing Director Dr Vikas Kumar met Naidu and discussed cooperation for building Metro projects in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.
