Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit Jalandhar on Wednesday to address the concluding programme of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, a statewide campaign focused on the issue of drug abuse.
Shah’s visit comes as Punjab Police intensify action against alleged drug trafficking and illegal arms networks in Amritsar.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said police dismantled three alleged networks and arrested five people in the latest operations.
According to police, the operations resulted in the recovery of 13 pistols, 22 cartridges and 3.267 kg of heroin.
Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations indicated that the arrested individuals were allegedly involved in supplying illegal weapons and narcotics.
Police are now investigating the wider network and trying to identify others allegedly involved, including suspected foreign-based handlers.
The police action comes a day after Amritsar Rural Police announced another crackdown on an alleged arms and narcotics network. Three people were arrested in that case.
Police said they recovered 10.030 kg of heroin, an AK-47 rifle, an AK-56 rifle, three magazines and 10 cartridges.
The BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’ has travelled nearly 4,000 kilometres across Punjab and covered all 117 Assembly constituencies.
The party has said the campaign was organised to raise awareness about drug abuse and build public participation around the issue.
Shah is expected to address the concluding event in Jalandhar at around 2 PM. His visit comes ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with the BJP placing the issue of drugs prominently in its political messaging.
BJP leaders have criticised the Aam Aadmi Party government over its handling of the drug problem.
The allegations are part of the ongoing political debate in the state.
The Jalandhar event, however, will mark the conclusion of the BJP’s statewide ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’.
