Amit Shah Welcomes Gujarat UCC Bill Passage; Stresses Equal Laws

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday welcomed the passage of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026, in Gujarat, stressing that the nation should function on the principle of equal laws for all citizens.

With this move, Gujarat became the second state after Uttarakhand to pass the UCC Bill, introducing a common legal framework for civil matters such as marriage, divorce, maintenance, and inheritance across communities.

In a post on X, Shah said the country should not operate on appeasement but on equality before the law. He described the implementation of a uniform legal system as a long-standing commitment of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Shah added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP-ruled states are steadily advancing towards implementing this vision. He also congratulated Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and legislators who supported the Bill, calling it a strong demonstration of commitment to legal uniformity.

The legislation mandates compulsory registration of marriages and divorces and introduces uniform procedures for separation across communities. It prohibits extra-judicial divorce practices, making legal processes through courts mandatory.

The Bill also enforces monogamy and includes provisions to void marriages where identity has been concealed. It introduces penalties for fraud, coercion, and misrepresentation in marital matters.

Additionally, the law ensures maintenance rights for women and guarantees equal inheritance rights for daughters and wives. It also requires registration of live-in relationships to enhance legal safeguards and accountability.

The government views the reform as a significant step towards legal equality and social justice across the state.
