On the final day of campaigning for the second phase of Assembly polls in West Bengal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah called on voters to exercise their democratic rights without fear on April 29. He reassured the electorate that extensive security arrangements were in place and dismissed concerns about intimidation.
Taking to X, Shah posted, “Don’t worry about Didi’s goons; the Election Commission has deployed CAPF at every nook and cranny. Today, I’m saying it as I go—after the elections, a BJP government is coming. Even so, CAPF will stay right here for the next 60 days,” emphasising that central forces would continue to ensure safety even after the results are declared on May 4.
The Minister’s remarks came as campaigning wrapped up for the second phase of elections in the state.
This phase will see polling across 142 Assembly constituencies, making it a significant milestone in the electoral process.
Ahead of voting, the Election Commission of India decided to enhance surveillance around polling booths. Officials expanded CCTV coverage to include roads leading to critical and hypersensitive polling stations.
Authorities noted that cameras already placed inside polling premises during the first phase. Reports of voter intimidation outside booths led to the decision to widen surveillance coverage.
Officials confirmed that the number of cameras installed on approach roads would depend on how sensitive each polling station is. This step aims to ensure stricter monitoring in areas identified as more prone to disturbances.
The Election Commission of India also reported large-scale seizures carried out by enforcement teams.
Flying squads and security agencies have confiscated cash, liquor and other inducements worth ₹510.10 crore so far. This amount is significantly higher than the ₹339 crore seized during the 2021 Assembly elections, reflecting intensified monitoring efforts in the ongoing polls.
The counting of votes for the 294-member Assembly in West Bengal will take place on May 4. The results will determine the formation of the next government, with all parties closely tracking developments.
