Amit Shah To Chair First-Ever BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ Meeting In New Delhi

India will host the first-ever BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards strengthening regional cooperation on security issues.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair the meeting, where member countries will discuss cross-border threats.

Shah called it a historic step towards jointly tackling terrorism, organised crime, drug trafficking, radicalisation and cyber threats.

“Through decisive coordination, we remain committed to building a safer, stronger, and more secure BIMSTEC region,” the Home Minister said.

Member nations will discuss regional security and ways to jointly combat terrorism, organised crime, drug and human trafficking, and cybercrime.

BIMSTEC, or the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, comprises seven countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

The regional organisation promotes cooperation across sectors including connectivity, energy, agriculture, health, disaster management, environmental protection, climate change, fisheries and people-to-people relations.

The meeting follows the fifth Meeting of BIMSTEC National Security Chiefs, held in New Delhi in July.

National Security Advisers and heads of delegations further discussed measures to counter terrorism and organised crime, strengthen cyber, maritime and energy security, improve connectivity and disaster management, and address emerging threats.

The meeting adopted the BIMSTEC Guidelines for the Maritime Component of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief to help member countries conduct relief operations more efficiently across the region.

Participants endorsed guiding principles for maritime law enforcement agencies during interactions at sea.

The principles aim to improve predictability and promote safety during maritime engagements among member states.

The first-ever Home Ministers’ Meeting is expected to build on these initiatives and strengthen BIMSTEC’s collective approach to regional security and cross-border crime.
