Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday lauded the security forces for their decisive action in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district, where two senior Maoist leaders were neutralised during an ongoing encounter near the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border in the Abujhmad region.
He described the strike as a critical step in India’s mission to eradicate Left Wing Extremism.
Shah confirmed that the eliminated Maoist leaders were Katta Ramachandra Reddy and Kadri Satyanarayan Reddy, both key members of the CPI (Maoist) Central Committee.
He said the success represented ‘a major victory for our forces and a severe blow to the Maoist leadership’, bringing India closer to ending what he called ‘red terror’.
The encounter began early on Monday when a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Border Security Force (BSF) moved into the forested terrain following precise intelligence.
Maoists opened fire on the advancing troops, triggering an intense exchange.
Superintendent of Police Robinson Guria confirmed that security forces killed two Maoists and recovered weapons from the site.
Security forces continued combing operations through the day, with intermittent firing still reported.
Officials believe more Maoist cadres may be hiding in the region and have intensified the search operation.
This action forms part of a wider crackdown on Maoist activity in Chhattisgarh.
Security forces have killed 248 Maoists in various encounters across the state so far in 2025, including 219 in the Bastar division alone.
Security forces carried out the most recent large-scale operation on September 11 in Gariaband, where they neutralised ten Maoists, including another senior leader.
The latest success in Abujhmad underscores the growing effectiveness of intelligence-led ground operations. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and avoid forested areas until the situation stabilises.
