Amit Shah Praises Budget 2026–27 For Boosting India’s Global Profile

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday described the Union Budget 2026–27 as a defining step in shaping India’s identity as an emerging global economic power centre.

Addressing the Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Shah said it would turbocharge momentum to strengthen India’s standing on the global stage.

In a post on X, Shah said the Viksit Bharat Budget reflects India’s growing confidence in its own strengths and highlights the country’s transition into an attractive global investment destination.

He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary economic policies for fuelling growth in the post-COVID period and laying the foundation for sustained expansion.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her ninth consecutive Union Budget under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, anchoring it around three core kartavyas or duties.

These include improving competitiveness, fulfilling aspirations, and ensuring equitable access to resources and opportunities across families, communities, and regions.

A strong thrust on infrastructure development remained a central theme, with emphasis on sustained public investment to drive growth and balanced regional development.

The government will continue to prioritise infrastructure upgrades in cities with populations exceeding five lakh, particularly Tier-2 and Tier-3 urban centres that have emerged as key growth engines.

The Budget also outlined forward-looking reforms in the financial sector to strengthen the banking system and improve ease of doing business as India advances towards the goal of Viksit Bharat.

However, markets reacted sharply to a steep hike in the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on futures and options, which experts linked to an intraday stock market sell-off.

While STT rates were raised significantly, Sitharaman confirmed there would be no change in income tax slabs, maintaining stability for individual taxpayers.
