Amit Shah Pays Tribute To Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar On Birth Anniversary

Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar on his birth anniversary, remembering the social reformer as a prominent figure of the Bengal Renaissance and highlighting his contribution to education and social change.

In a post shared on the occasion, Shah wrote, “On the birth anniversary of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar ji, a great pillar of the Bengal Renaissance, I remember him and pay my respects.”

The Minister said Vidyasagar established education as one of the most powerful mediums for social change.

Shah highlighted Varnaparichay, noting that the work gave a new form to the Bengali alphabet and opened the doors of knowledge to countless children.

“Vidyasagar ji made education the most powerful medium of social change. By authoring ‘Varnaparichay’, he not only gave a new form to the Bengali alphabet but also opened the doors of knowledge for countless children,” the post added.

The Minister recalled Vidyasagar’s lifelong efforts to promote widow remarriage and women’s education. He said the reformer’s life and ideals continue to guide society.

Vidyasagar remains closely associated with the Bengal Renaissance and is remembered for challenging social practices while expanding access to education. His work on women’s education and widow remarriage also became an important part of India’s 19th-century social reform movement.

The tribute emphasised the continuing relevance of Vidyasagar’s commitment to learning, social reform and greater opportunities for women. His contributions to education and his efforts to address social inequalities remain an important part of India’s reformist history.
