Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth ₹330 crore in Ahmedabad, marking a major step forward in strengthening the city’s urban infrastructure.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) undertook the projects to significantly improve civic amenities and enhance residents’ quality of life.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel attended the event, which also saw the unveiling of an idol of Lord Ganesh.
It also featured the distribution of land ownership certificates (sanads) to rehabilitated residents of New Vanjar village, bringing long-awaited relief to affected families.
A major highlight of the programme was the inauguration of the Western Trunk Main Line drainage project, a long-pending initiative crucial for the western and south-western parts of Ahmedabad.
The project is designed to address chronic sewage overflow and wastewater management issues faced by nearly 15 lakh residents across multiple localities.
Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah described the occasion as modest in scale but profound in significance.
He recalled the devastating Sabarmati floods of 1973 and noted that, after nearly five decades, 173 affected families have finally received legal ownership of their residential plots.
“While the number may seem small for a city like Ahmedabad, for these families it is a historic and emotionally significant moment,” Shah said.
The Union Minister congratulated local MLA Amitbhai Thakar, the Mayor of Ahmedabad and the Municipal Commissioner for taking decisive steps to resolve an issue pending for over 50 years.
He said addressing such long-standing problems reflects the spirit of compassionate and responsive governance.
Shah highlighted that for years, large parts of western and south-western Ahmedabad lacked a systematic drainage network.
Rapid urbanisation between 2000 and 2005, especially from Shela to Chandkheda, had far outpaced infrastructure development.
“As a Member of Parliament, it was painful to see sewage overflowing in several areas,” he remarked.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has effectively implemented urban development schemes such as AMRUT to improve living conditions.
As part of these efforts, it has laid large RCC pipelines with diameters ranging from 1,200 mm to 1,800 mm at an estimated cost of nearly ₹400 crore.
These upgrades will benefit areas including Gota, Chandlodia, Science City, South Bopal, Bhadaj, Hebatpur, Thaltej, Bopal-Ghuma, Bodakdev, Vejalpur, Sarkhej, Maktampura, Juhapura, Fatehwadi, Shantipura and Sanathal, offering a long-term solution to drainage-related problems.
“The fulfilment of decades-old demands reflects the politics of compassionate development envisioned by Prime Minister Modi,” Shah said.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said the year 2025 will be remembered as a landmark year of development and global recognition for Ahmedabad.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring access to basic necessities for every citizen.
He also highlighted increased green cover in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency through initiatives such as Miyawaki forests and oxygen parks.
Referring to the distribution of sanads, Patel said true public service lies in understanding and easing people’s suffering.
The Chief Minister announced a 40 per cent increase in the urban development budget to ₹30,000 crore, declared 2025 as the ‘Year of Urban Development’, and said Ahmedabad will emerge as a hub for international sporting events.
Ahmedabad Mayor Pratibha Jain expressed gratitude to Amit Shah and Chief Minister Patel for their continued support in strengthening civic infrastructure.
Senior leaders, officials and a large number of city residents attended the event.
