Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a round-the-clock water supply project in Manimajra, Chandigarh, on Sunday, marking a significant advancement under the Smart City Mission. This initiative, which aims to provide clean and filtered water 24/7, is set to benefit over 100,000 residents across several localities, including Modern Housing Complex, Shivalik Enclave, Indira Colony, and Shastri Nagar.
Speaking at the inauguration, Shah emphasized the crucial role of water in maintaining health and preventing disease. “Water is essential for life. When it is not clean, it leads to various health issues. However, this project will ensure that the residents receive filter-cleaned water round the clock and will stand the test of time,” he said.

The project, which cost ₹75 crore, includes several key features designed to enhance water supply efficiency and sustainability. These include high-pressure supply systems to minimize water wastage, leakage reduction, smart metering, reduced dependence on groundwater, and monitoring of energy consumption.
A total of 22 kilometers of new water supply pipelines have been laid as part of the project, and two underground reservoirs, each with a capacity of two million gallons per day, have been constructed. Additionally, nearly 270 kilometers of the existing water supply network, which is unsuitable for high-pressure water delivery, will be replaced in future phases.
The implementation of the project will occur in phases, with the city divided into 55 district metering areas. The initial phase focuses on establishing 24×7 water supply, with the full city coverage expected by 2028.
Following the water project inauguration, Shah is scheduled to review the implementation of new criminal laws at the Chandigarh Secretariat. He will further inaugurate several new systems designed to improve the criminal justice apparatus, including e-evidence, Nyay Setu, Nyay Shruti, and e-summon systems.
“Today, Bharat’s criminal justice system is set to make significant strides towards providing speedy and timely justice. The new systems will enhance our criminal justice infrastructure in Chandigarh,” Shah announced on social media platform X.
Moreover, upon arrival at Chandigarh Airport, Shah was greeted by Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria before heading directly to the Manimajra site for the project launch.
