Amit Shah Calls For AI-Driven Crime Detection And Prevention Systems

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday emphasised the need to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to strengthen crime detection and prevention mechanisms across the country. He said these technologies can help transform data into actionable intelligence.

Addressing the 26th All India Fingerprint Conference–2026 in New Delhi, Shah called for dedicated AI teams in every state. He said these teams should analyse crime patterns, identify repeat offenders and track international criminals.

“We need to build AI teams and use our software as an effective tool for crime analysis and to make the best use of all the provisions,” the Home Minister said.

Shah stressed the need to use AI and ML to study criminal behaviour and bridge jurisdictional gaps that offenders often exploit.

“We need teams in all states to use AI and ML to study crime patterns and identify repeat offenders. We also need profiling and steps to prevent criminals from using jurisdictional gaps between different states,” he added.

The Union Minister said the system must focus on fixing responsibility in cases involving attempts to disturb national security. He further underlined the importance of combating cybercrime, encouraging third-party audits, and ensuring strict checks against the misuse of authority.

Referring to ongoing reforms in the criminal justice system, Shah said India is currently undergoing a significant transformation. He noted that traditional approaches centred around police stations and law-and-order management are being strengthened through modern legal and investigative frameworks.

The Home Minister highlighted provisions in the new criminal laws that require forensic experts to visit crime scenes in serious offences punishable by seven years or more. He said forensic teams now collect evidence directly from such crime scenes.

Shah also said mandatory videography of evidence collection has become part of the process. He added that this measure helps prevent tampering.

According to Shah, forensic evidence is strengthening criminal investigations. He said video documentation is also improving the quality and reliability of investigations.

Shah added that these measures contribute to a fair and efficient administration of justice.
