Latest News on Delhi Air Pollution: On Thursday and Friday night, there was some light rainfall in several parts of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and the neighboring districts of the National Capital Region. This was a much-needed break from the poisonous air quality in the NCR. The rain fell on Delhi at a time when the city government was preparing to use cloud seeding to create artificial precipitation on November 20–21 in an effort to combat the extreme air pollution.

Images captured from the Kartavya Path, ITO, and the boundary between Delhi and Noida revealed light to moderate rain showers.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reports that on Friday morning, the average air quality index (AQI) in Anand Vihar, Delhi, improved to the “moderate” category from 462.Similar to this, RK Puram’s average AQI stayed in the severe category at 446, however the CPCB statistics indicated that the air quality significantly improved (to a good level) in the morning.

In Noida sector-62, the average AQI was 425, while the lowest value was 56 (acceptable). An abrupt improvement in the quality of the air was also observed in Gurugram, where the average AQI remained’very poor’ at 399, while the AQI registered at 50 (excellent) around 6 am.

The AQI is divided into six categories: “Very Poor” (300-400), “Good” (0-50), “Satisfactory” (50-100), “Moderately polluted” (100-200), “Poor” (200-300), and “Severe” (400-500).

‘Severe’ is the average AQI for Delhi on Thursday.

The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) for Delhi, which is calculated at 4 p.m. daily, was 437 on Thursday, down from 426 on Wednesday. The Indo-Gangetic plains were covered in clusters of red dots on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)-prepared AQI map, which denotes hazardous air quality.  Extremely poor air quality was also observed in nearby Ghaziabad (391), Gurugram (404), Noida (394), Greater Noida (439), and Faridabad (410).

AAP ministers examine the borders in Delhi

To guarantee the execution of anti-pollution measures, the Delhi government has also sent out ministers. Several ministers from Delhi were observed on Thursday checking various locations and borders that link Delhi with neighboring states as part of the inspection procedure.

The nation’s capital currently operates under Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) following a sharp decline in air quality to the ‘severe plus’ level.

Delhi schools are on winter holiday, and app-based taxis are prohibited. The government postponed the schools’ December winter break on Wednesday. The new dates of the school’s winter vacation are November 9–November 18.

The Supreme Court’s directives have prohibited the entry of app-based taxis into the nation’s capital, according to Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai. Additionally, he stated that the odd-even car rationing plan will be put into force in the city following an order and review by the highest court. The case will be heard again on Friday. The Delhi government’s car-rationing plan, which aims to reduce traffic pollution, was questioned by the supreme court on Tuesday, calling it “all optics” and questioning its effectiveness.

Rai had on Monday stated that the flagship program, which allows automobiles to operate on alternating days based on the odd or even final digit of their registration numbers, would be implemented between November 13 and November 20 in anticipation of significant deterioration of the air quality following Diwali.

The Delhi government will pay for the fake rain

According to news agency PTI, which cited sources, the Delhi government has opted to foot the whole bill for artificial rain to tackle harmful air pollution in the city and has instructed the chief secretary to put the government’s case before the Supreme Court on Friday.

The Delhi administration can set up the first phase of artificial rain in the city by November 20 if the Center approves of the move. “The chief secretary has been directed to inform the Supreme court that the Delhi government has in principle agreed, based on the advice of an IIT-Kanpur team, to bear the cost of Phase 1 and Phase 2 pilots (totalling ₹13 Crore) for carrying out artificial rain,” a top government official stated.

After meeting with the IIT-Kanpur team on Wednesday, Rai announced that the Arvind Kejriwal government intends to use cloud seeding technology to create artificial rain in order to reduce air pollution in Delhi.
