The Air India Dreamliner crash on Thursday near Ahmedabad Airport has brought renewed focus to the Boeing 787-8’s troubled safety record. The aircraft, operating as flight AI171 to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after take-off, carrying 242 people, including 10 crew members.
Authorities are investigating the cause, with no confirmed casualty figures yet. The government has assured full support for rescue and relief efforts.
Though the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is considered modern and fuel-efficient, it has faced multiple safety concerns since its launch.
In 2013, the global fleet was grounded following lithium-ion battery fires. One battery caught fire on a parked Japan Airlines jet in Boston, while another caused a mid-air emergency in Japan.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) halted operations until Boeing redesigned the battery system. Yet, issues have persisted.
In 2024, whistleblower and Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour alleged that gaps and poor assembly in the Dreamliner’s fuselage could lead to structural failure. The FAA opened an investigation which remains active.
In March 2025, a Boeing 787-9 operated by LATAM Airlines dropped altitude suddenly mid-flight, injuring 50 passengers. Investigators traced the cause to a cockpit seat malfunction.
Pilots have also reported engine icing, fuel leaks, generator failures, and electrical faults. Despite its reputation for safety, the Dreamliner has seen repeated technical difficulties.
The aircraft involved in Thursday’s crash first flew in 2013 and joined Air India’s fleet in January 2014. Both Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are probing the incident.
