Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Investigators have recovered the black box from the wreckage of Air India Flight AI-171, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday.
The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
The black box—technically known as the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), is expected to play a crucial role in determining the cause of the crash.
It contains essential information such as flight speed, altitude, engine performance, and cockpit audio, including conversations between the pilots and air traffic control.
Despite its name, the black box is painted bright orange to aid visibility in wreckage. Built with durable materials such as steel and titanium, the device includes two key components:
These devices are engineered to endure extreme impact, high temperatures, and water exposure, ensuring vital data survives even under catastrophic conditions.
In a parallel development, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) recovered a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) from the crash site. Investigators believe the DVR may provide visual evidence of the aircraft’s final moments, potentially complementing the flight data.
Authorities are now preparing to analyse both the flight recorders and the DVR to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the crash.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the family of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was among those killed in the tragic crash. He expressed his condolences and paid an emotional tribute.
Taking to X, PM Mod posted, “Met the family of Shri Vijaybhai Rupani Ji. It is unimaginable that Vijaybhai is not in our midst. I’ve known him for decades. We worked together, shoulder to shoulder, including during some of the most challenging times. Vijaybhai was humble and hardworking, firmly committed to the Party’s ideology. Rising up the ranks, he held various responsibilities in the Organisation and went on to serve diligently as Gujarat’s Chief Minister.”
Rupani’s wife, Anjali Rupani, returned from London following the accident and was present during the meeting.
PM Modi described the late BJP leader as ‘humble and hardworking, firmly committed to the party’s ideology’. He recalled Rupani’s journey through the ranks of the party and his dedicated service as Gujarat’s Chief Minister.
