According to singer Shubh, he didn’t see the “Indira Gandhi hoodie”: “Regardless of what I do”

Singer Shubh, who is Punjabi-Canadian who was recently targeted for criticism for his purported support of Khalistan, found himself in a new controversy when he was spotted on stage waving a sweatshirt that featured a map of Punjab with an image of Indira Gandhi’s murder on it. On October 29, at a concert in London, the incident happened. Shubh claimed, after taking criticism, that he was not aware of what was inside the sweatshirt when it was thrown at him from the audience. “During my first London gig, I was tossed a lot of clothes, jewelry, and phones by the crowd. The singer released a statement, saying, “I wasn’t there to see what was thrown at me and what was on it. I was there to perform.” “Regardless of what I do, certain individuals will find a way to use that against me,” he continued, alluding to the recent uproar in India that resulted to the cancellation of his India tour.

An earlier post by the artist came to light amid the diplomatic spat between Canada and India over Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claim that India was involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Shubh had published a warped map of India in that tweet, one that excluded J&K, Punjab, and the northeastern provinces. The post prayed for Punjab. “My own nation is India. I was raised here. This land belonged to my gurus and ancestors, who gave their all to secure the independence, glory, and well-being of their family without even blinking an eye. Furthermore, Punjab runs in my family and is my essence. I am who I am today because I am a Punjabi. Punjabis do not have to provide evidence of nationalism. Punjabis have given their lives for this nation’s freedom at every turn throughout history. I humbly ask that you please refrain from labelling every Punjabi as a separatist or an anti-national.

When Shubh appeared to be picking up the sweatshirt in the viral video from the London concert, many people on social media speculated that he first glanced at the artwork on stage before raising it. Several social media accounts stated that Akaal Clothing, which utilized the singer’s performance to spread anti-Indian sentiment, was the source of the sweatshirt.

Bollywood film producer, director, and actor Kangana Ranaut chastised Shubh, calling it cowardly to rejoice over the “killing of an old woman by those who she appointed as her saviours”. “It is a dishonorable act of cowardice, not bravery, when someone you are trusted to guard betrays that trust and faith by using the same weapons to kill the people you are supposed to protect. Nothing to laud here Shubham ji, one should be embarrassed of such a brutal attack on an old lady who was disarmed and uninformed, a lady who was the chosen head of a democracy “, Kangana said.
