AAP Slashed Punjab Farm Fires By 50%, BJP Playing Dirty Politics: Delhi CM Atishi

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi criticized the BJP for its handling of rising pollution levels in the capital, particularly from stubble burning. At a press conference, she rejected BJP claims that Punjab is the main source of pollution, stating that since the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took charge, Punjab’s farm fires have decreased by 50 percent.

Rising Pollution and Political Blame

Atishi noted the alarming pollution levels in both air and water, highlighting the foam in the Yamuna as evidence. She accused the BJP of failing to tackle these issues, engaging instead in political maneuvering.

AAP’s Success in Reducing Stubble Burning in Punjab

Atishi emphasized AAP’s achievements in Punjab, revealing that stubble burning incidents dropped from 71,300 in 2021 to 36,600 in 2023. She attributed this progress to sustained efforts by the AAP government. According to the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Punjab recorded only 811 farm fires between October 1 and 15, 2023, a 27 percent decrease from the previous year. In contrast, Haryana saw a 23 percent increase in farm fires during the same period.

Atishi challenged the BJP, asking why its governments in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh could not replicate Punjab’s success. She urged them to focus on reducing stubble burning rather than playing politics.

Atishi also addressed pollution from diesel buses, pointing out that all buses in Delhi are now CNG or electric. However, she noted that 100 percent of buses entering Delhi from Haryana and UP still run on diesel. “Why haven’t the BJP governments in Haryana and UP introduced electric buses?” she asked.

The Chief Minister further raised concerns about pollution from brick kilns, highlighting that while Delhi has none, Haryana and UP host over 3,800 in the NCR region, significantly contributing to pollution.

In addition to pollution, Atishi criticized the BJP for the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi. She cited recent violent incidents, including a shooting and a bomb blast, accusing the BJP of obstructing the elected government’s work. “The BJP spends all its time obstructing the work of the AAP government,” she concluded, urging them to allow AAP to serve the people of Delhi.
