A Towering Personality Whose Life Was Dedicated To Serving Society, Says PM Modi On Mannathu Padmanabhan’s Birth Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured Mannathu Padmanabhan on his birth anniversary, the eminent social reformer and freedom fighter from Kerala, and described him as ‘a towering personality whose life dedicated itself to serving society’.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “On the birth anniversary of Mannathu Padmanabhan, we remember with deep reverence a towering personality whose life was dedicated to serving society. He was a visionary who believed that true progress is rooted in dignity, equality and social reform. His efforts in areas like health, education, women empowerment are very motivating. His ideals continue to guide us towards a society that is just, compassionate and harmonious.”

Mannathu Padmanabhan’s Life and Legacy

Born on 2 January 1878 at Perunna near Changanassery, Mannam rose from humble beginnings.

Despite financial hardships and interrupted schooling, he became a teacher and later qualified as a lawyer, experiences that shaped his empathy for social inequities and his commitment to reform.

In 1912, he founded the Keraleeya Nair Samajam, which evolved into the Nair Service Society (NSS) in 1915.

The organisation created a platform for educational advancement, social uplift and community organisation.

While primarily serving the Nair community, Mannam’s reformist vision extended beyond sectional boundaries, aligning with Kerala’s wider renaissance movement.

Mannam played a key role in historic struggles, including the Guruvayur Satyagraha of 1931, opposed authoritarian rule in Travancore, and served as a member of the Travancore Legislative Assembly.

He also strengthened educational infrastructure, including the establishment of the NSS Engineering College, fostering academic and professional opportunities for generations.

Nationally recognised for his contributions, Mannam earned the title Bharata Kesari and later received the Padma Bhushan.

More than five decades after his passing in 1970, he remains a defining symbol of principled leadership, social reform and institution-building in Kerala’s public life.

Mannam’s towering personality was further evident when he became the president of the Travancore Devasom Board upon its formation in 1949.

While the TDB faces contemporary controversies, including the Sabarimala gold heist case, Mannam’s vision and reformist spirit continue to inspire principled action in society.

PM Modi’s tribute underlines that Mannathu Padmanabhan’s ideals of dignity, equality, education, and social service remain relevant today.

His life demonstrates how education, organisation and moral reform can drive societal progress.
