‘A Proud Moment For Every Indian’: PM Modi On Sarnath’s UNESCO Honour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated the nation after Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, describing the development as a moment of pride for Indians. He further said the global recognition highlights India’s centuries-old cultural and spiritual traditions.

The Prime Minister underlined Sarnath’s special connection with Lord Buddha, whose teachings of peace, compassion, and harmony continue to influence people worldwide.

Sharing his reaction on X, PM Modi stated that the UNESCO recognition would motivate more people from across the globe to visit Sarnath and experience the values associated with Buddha’s philosophy.

UNESCO officially included Sarnath among the World Heritage sites, recognising its outstanding historical and religious importance.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the honour reflects India’s rich heritage and will help spread awareness about Buddha’s message of wisdom and peaceful coexistence.

The World Heritage Committee announced the recognition during its 48th session, which is currently taking place in Busan, South Korea.

India’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Ambassador Vishal V Sharma, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Archaeological Survey of India, and the World Heritage Centre for supporting the recognition. He noted that Sarnath continues to serve as a spiritual destination for millions of Buddhists around the world.

The site also encourages younger generations to embrace values such as truth, non-violence, responsible living, and social harmony.

Historical Significance

Sarnath occupies a unique place in world history as the location where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. This historic event marked the beginning of the Buddhist Sangha and the spread of his teachings.

The Lion Capital of Ashoka, which historians discovered at Sarnath and later adopted as India’s National Emblem, further strengthens the site’s historical importance.

The UNESCO listing recognises India’s enduring civilisational heritage and highlights the universal message of peace, compassion, and harmony that Buddha’s teachings promote.

The honour will also boost cultural tourism and increase global awareness of India’s spiritual traditions.
