60-Metre Tricolour Hoisted At Kolkata Port As Part Of Har Ghar Tiranga Initiative

The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) hoisted the Indian Tricolour on a 60-metre-high flagmast at Netaji Subhas Dock in Kolkata on Friday as part of the Har Ghar Tiranga initiative.

Standing at nearly 197 feet, the flagmast is among the tallest National Flag installations in the city.

The new landmark carries a 30 ft × 20 ft National Flag and adds to the historic landscape of Kolkata’s port.

The initiative reflects SMPA’s commitment to national pride, unity and the vision of a Viksit Bharat.

A senior SMPA official said the Tricolour flying above the historic docks highlights the enduring contribution of Kolkata Port to India’s maritime heritage and nation-building.

The permanent flagmast has a design life of 25 years and features a tapered, hot-dip galvanised, 20-sided polygonal high-tensile steel shaft mounted on an RCC bored cast-in-situ pile foundation.

Officials said a motorised double-drum winch system operates the flag.

Kolkata Port is India’s oldest operational riverine major port and began operations in 1870.

The Tricolour now stands beside the historic clock tower, built in 1899 to help arriving ships keep time.

The authorities commissioned Netaji Subhas Dock in 1928 as King George’s Dock and renamed it in 1973.

During the Second World War, the dock supported personnel and equipment movements for operations in the China-Burma-India theatre.

Netaji Subhas Dock has 10 berths, including container, liquid cargo, multipurpose and heavy-lift facilities. It has two dry docks and connects to the River Hooghly through a 90-foot lock. It remains a major container hub, serving India’s northern and northeastern regions as well as landlocked Nepal and Bhutan.
