5 Kg LPG Cylinders Now Available Without Address Proof As Govt Eases Access

The government on Saturday announced that 5 kg LPG cylinders can now be purchased from distributors by showing any valid ID, without the need for address proof. The move comes amid heightened concerns over global energy supply due to tensions in West Asia and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Officials said the decision is intended to improve access to cooking fuel. It is particularly aimed at migrant workers and individuals who may not have local address documentation.

Since March 23, around 5.7 lakh such cylinders have been sold, with more than 71,000 units sold in a single day recently.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reiterated that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or LPG in the country. It urged citizens to avoid panic buying.

All retail fuel outlets are operating normally, with sufficient stocks available nationwide. This is despite reports of heavy rush at some petrol pumps triggered by rumours.

To ensure an uninterrupted supply, the government has ramped up domestic LPG production and maintained refineries at high operating capacity. It has also prioritised fuel distribution for households, hospitals and essential services.

Alongside supply-side efforts, several demand-side measures have been introduced. These include extending the LPG booking cycle and promoting alternative fuels such as PNG, kerosene and electric cooking solutions.

States have also been advised to facilitate new PNG connections for both domestic and commercial users.

Authorities have intensified monitoring to curb hoarding and black marketing.

More than 3,700 raids have been conducted recently, with strict action taken against erring LPG distributors, including licence suspensions.

State governments have been empowered under the Essential Commodities Act to enforce compliance through regular inspections and public briefings.
