A powerful 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Assam’s Guwahati at 4:41 PM on Saturday, shaking large parts of the state and sending panic among residents.
The tremors spread as far as North Bengal and neighbouring Bhutan. According to officials, the quake’s epicentre lay in Udalguri district, and its depth was measured at just 5 km, making the impact more intense.
Authorities confirmed that no reports of injury or damage to property have surfaced so far. Disaster management teams monitored the situation closely while officials reassured citizens that precautionary measures were in place.
The Northeast region falls within India’s highest seismic zone, which makes earthquakes frequent in states like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya. Seismologists explained that people usually feel shallow quakes, such as this one with a depth of 5 km, more strongly, even if the magnitude is moderate.
As news of the quake spread rapidly, Guwahati climbed to the top of India’s trending list on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Residents flooded timelines with updates, personal accounts, and pictures of people rushing outdoors to safety. One of the users shared a glimpse from his residence.
This latest quake comes only days after a 3.5 magnitude tremor hit Assam’s Sonitpur district on September 2. Experts noted that back-to-back tremors highlight the region’s vulnerability and urged citizens to remain alert while following official advisories.
Officials advised residents to stay cautious and avoid panic, reminding them of safety measures during earthquakes. With Assam lying in a sensitive seismic belt, experts emphasised the importance of preparedness to minimise risks in the event of stronger quakes in the future.
