In Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu at least 34 people died after the consumption of illicit liquor on Thursday. Several people are admitted in various hospital following a hooch tragedy in the district.
The death toll has been confirmed by M.S. Prashanth, District Collector of Kallakurichi. “The death toll due to alleged illicit liquor consumption in Kallakurichi rises to 34,” the DM informed.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin condemned the fatalities and acted against those responsible for their failure to stop them.
“When I learned that people in Kallakurichi had died from drinking tainted alcohol, I was both astonished and heartbroken. In this case, the criminals have been taken into custody. Stalin stated in a post on X that “actions have also been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it.”
Governor R.N. Ravi expressed his condolences for the victims’ passing and wished them a quick recovery.
He said, “Deeply shocked at the reported loss of lives due to consumption of illicit liquor in Kallakurichi. Many more victims are in serious condition battling for lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for speedy recovery of those in hospitals. Every now and then tragic loss of lives due to consumption of illicit liquors are reported from various parts of our state. This reflects continuing lapses in preventing production and consumption of illicit liquor. This is a matter of serious concern.”
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.K. Stalin promised the compensation of 10 lakh to the families. Tamil Nadu government will grant 10 lakh to the families of deceased and 50 thousand to those who are being treated in the hospitals.
