A new study claims that consuming vegan food for short period of time can reduce the biological age estimation.
Understanding one’s biological age can assist one assess one’s risk for dementia or diabetes. Published in the journal BMC Medicine, the research demonstrated that the apparent age decrease was dependent on DNA methylation levels. DNA methylation is a sort of epigenetic modification that modifies gene expression but not DNA itself.
The molecular consequences of a brief vegan diet were examined in a recent study that involved 21 pairs of adult identical twins and was randomised, controlled.
For eight weeks, the researchers gave one half of each twin pair instructions to follow an omnivorous diet that included between 170 and 225 grams of meat, one egg, and one and a half servings of dairy per day, while the other half was directed to follow a vegan diet for the same amount of time.

Researchers discovered that individuals who followed a vegan diet had lower estimates of biological age, or what are known as epigenetic ageing clocks, than those who followed an omnivorous diet.
The ages of the heart, hormones, liver, inflammatory and metabolic systems all decreased in vegan diet participants. Because of the variations in calorie amounts, they also shed an average of two kg more than those who followed an omnivorous diet.
The authors noted that the results were ambiguous and emphasized the need for additional research into the connection between food composition, weight, and aging.
