A Florida-based longevity specialist has offered a reality check on some of the world’s most popular superfoods, rating them for their true health and longevity benefits amid growing confusion driven by social media food trends.
In an Instagram post shared in November, Dr Carlos De La Hoz, an anaesthesiologist specialising in regenerative medicine and pain management, assessed commonly consumed superfoods on a scale of 10. His goal, he said, was to help people distinguish genuinely anti-inflammatory, nutrient-rich foods from those that only carry a healthy image.
“Some foods support cellular health and lower inflammation… others are marketed as “healthy” but simply are not,” Dr De La Hoz noted.
Wild salmon topped the list with a perfect score. According to the doctor, it delivers high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and healthy fats that support brain and heart health while reducing inflammation.
Blueberries also earned full marks. Dr De La Hoz described them as one of the most powerful fruits pound for pound, rich in antioxidants and polyphenols. He added that pairing them with yoghurt can further enhance their nutritional value.
Extra-virgin olive oil followed closely with a strong rating. He highlighted it as an excellent fat for cooking and salads, noting its oleic acid content and long-standing links to longevity in Mediterranean diets.
Avocados received a favourable score for their monounsaturated fats, although Dr De La Hoz cautioned that portion control is essential due to their calorie density.
Turmeric combined with black pepper also ranked well. He explained that black pepper dramatically improves turmeric’s absorption, significantly increasing its anti-inflammatory potential.
Granola emerged as one of the poorest performers. Despite its healthy reputation, Dr De La Hoz described it as largely sugar-laden oats, more comparable to a dessert than a longevity-supporting food.
Acai bowls also scored low. While acai berries themselves are nutritious, he pointed out that most commercial bowls contain added sugars and granola, which undermine their health benefits.
Dr De La Hoz’s assessment underscores the importance of reading ingredients and understanding preparation methods rather than relying on marketing claims. His message is clear: longevity-friendly diets prioritise whole foods, healthy fats and low sugar intake over aesthetic appeal.
