The Desk Job Health Problem: How Sitting For Long Hours Affects Your Body

Long hours at a desk have become a routine part of modern life, especially for office workers, students and people who work from home.

However, prolonged sitting and limited physical activity can affect physical health and increase the risk of several long-term health problems.

Sitting for extended periods reduces the time people spend moving and engaging their muscles.

Research links sedentary behaviour with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and premature death, particularly when people combine prolonged sitting with insufficient physical activity.

Poor workstation habits can also contribute to neck, shoulder and lower-back discomfort.

People who lean towards their screens, use poorly positioned monitors or remain in the same posture for hours may experience muscle tension and stiffness.

Long periods of inactivity can also reduce daily energy expenditure. Over time, this pattern may contribute to weight gain when calorie intake consistently exceeds the body’s energy needs.

Standing up, stretching or walking briefly every 30 to 60 minutes can interrupt long periods of uninterrupted sitting.

Workers should position their screens near eye level, keep their feet supported and maintain a comfortable keyboard and mouse position.

Regular walking, cycling and other aerobic activities can also help improve cardiovascular fitness.

The World Health Organisation recommends that adults complete at least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, or an equivalent amount of vigorous activity.

Adults should also perform muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days each week.

People do not need to abandon desk jobs to improve their health.

Instead, they can combine better workstation habits, regular movement breaks and regular exercise to reduce the risks associated with sedentary lifestyles.

Small changes throughout the working day can support better mobility, comfort and long-term well-being.
