Diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease have emerged as major public health challenges in India, with experts warning that their combined impact can significantly reduce both life expectancy and quality of life.
Approximately 10 to 11 per cent of the adult population is living with diabetes, and many individuals gradually develop related conditions such as high blood pressure and kidney disease as they age.
Health experts note that diabetes and hypertension are among the leading causes of chronic kidney disease in India and contribute to nearly 75 per cent of end-stage renal disease cases.
When these conditions occur together, they can accelerate kidney damage and increase the likelihood of dialysis, kidney transplantation, heart attacks, heart failure and strokes.
Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, is often linked with insulin resistance, high blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol levels.
Persistently high blood sugar levels can damage small blood vessels, leading to complications affecting the kidneys, eyes and nervous system.
Common complications include diabetic kidney disease, retinopathy, macular oedema and peripheral neuropathy.
Hypertension is a major risk factor for kidney, eye and heart diseases.
High salt intake, chronic stress and family history can increase the risk, while uncontrolled blood pressure may accelerate kidney damage.
Doctors recommend regular screening, especially for adults over 35 and those with risk factors.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, controlling blood sugar and blood pressure, and seeking timely treatment can help prevent complications and improve long-term health outcomes.
