In a landmark scientific finding, researchers in Australia have discovered that the human heart can regenerate muscle cells following a heart attack.
Published in Circulation Research, the study shows for the first time in humans that the heart can regenerate muscle cells, a process earlier seen only in mice.
Doctors long believed heart attacks caused permanent damage, with dead muscle replaced by scar tissue that weakens the heart’s pumping ability.
The findings reveal that even as scarring occurs, the heart also generates new muscle cells, pointing to a natural capacity for regeneration.
“Until now, we believed that heart attacks caused permanent damage,” said Robert Hume, research fellow at the University of Sydney and the study’s first author. “Our findings show that the heart has a natural, albeit limited, ability to regenerate.”
The research team made the discovery using living heart tissue samples collected from patients undergoing bypass surgery at Australia’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
By analysing these samples, scientists identified increased mitosis—a process of cell division—in human heart muscle cells following a heart attack.
Scientists had earlier observed this process in animals but had never conclusively shown it in humans.
Hume said researchers aim to develop therapies that boost the heart’s natural regenerative ability.
“In time, we hope to amplify this process to repair the heart after an attack,” he said.
Professor Sean Lal, the study’s senior author, said the findings could lead to transformative treatments.
“The goal is to generate new heart cells to reverse heart failure,” he said.
With cardiovascular disease still the world’s leading cause of death, researchers say the discovery lays vital groundwork for regenerative medicine and offers new hope to patients.
